What is 3DS Authentication and Why Do I Need It?

At SimplyPayMe, your security (and that of your customers) is our top priority. We have recently introduced 3D Secure™ (3DS) authentication onto our platform. This is a security protocol used to authenticate your customers and provides an extra layer of protection for card transactions online and where a customer doesn’t enter their pin code into a payment terminal. It was designed to allow a cardholder to authenticate their identity to prevent you being subjected to payment fraud, unauthorised transactions, and reduce your chargebacks.

What is 3-D Secure Authentication?

The idea behind 3DS authentication is to provide an additional step to the financial authorisation process by validating that the person making the transaction is the actual cardholder. Previously, this process occurred in the background, was invisible to the user and authentication of the payment took place – unless the customers card issuer found reason to query the transaction.

However new legislation designed to increase consumer protection and protect against fraud, has meant that by March 2022 all of the card transactions you process will be authenticated in this way.

Therefore, you will begin to see some card transactions (gradually increasing over the coming months) requiring an additional authentication step, which will be as follows:

If your customers transaction requires additional authentication your customer will either:

  • Be prompted to confirm the transaction in their banking app, or
  • Receive a text message with a confirmation code, which you need to ask them to enter this into our app (or you can do this on their behalf).

This step could take up to ten seconds, but overall should create a less disruptive experience for yourself, as well as an additional level of security.

3DS authentication operates according to a 3-step model. Please see the diagram below for more information:

* After 3 failed authentication attempts, the transaction will be cancelled, and a hold will be placed on the customer’s card. In this case, they will have to contact their bank.

If you have any questions or concerns about this authentication process, how it works or there is something you are unsure of please do not hesitate to contact us here.

So don’t worry, we have your back when it comes to being secure!
